How Much Maca Can Maca Gummies Hold Compared With Trials?

Quick answer

Maca gummies are chewables made with maca root powder or extract. A gummy weighs a few grams, so it holds milligrams. HoneyBoost prints 10 mg of 10:1 maca extract, equal to 100 mg of root, per gummy. Trials used 1,500 mg or more. No study tested HoneyBoost.

The short answer01

What are maca gummies and what is in them?

Maca gummies are chewable supplements that include maca, a root grown in the Peruvian Andes, as a powder or an extract.

A gummy is mostly sugar, syrup and pectin. HoneyBoost weighs 4.2 g per gummy, and its six extracts together weigh 75 mg, about 1.8% of that.

There is little room in a gummy for the large amounts a capsule or a spoon of powder can carry.

On the label02

How much maca is in one HoneyBoost gummy?

One gummy has 10 mg of maca root extract at a 10:1 ratio. The label states that this equals 100 mg of maca root.

A 10:1 ratio means about ten parts of root went into one part of extract. So the root equivalent is a label figure, not an amount of any active compound.

What studies used03

What dose of maca did the trials use?

Small trials used 1,500 mg to 3,000 mg of maca a day, or 2,400 mg of dry extract.

In healthy men, 1,500 mg or 3,000 mg a day for 12 weeks was linked with higher self-rated sexual desire from week 8. Testosterone did not change (Gonzales 2002, Maca and Sexual Desire). In 50 men with mild ED, 2,400 mg of extract gave a small gain on a five-question survey, 1.6 points against 0.5 on placebo (Zenico 2009, Maca in Mild ED).

Both studies were small. Memorial Sloan Kettering says maca did not change testosterone or related hormones in men.

The arithmetic04

How does a maca gummy compare with study doses?

One gummy's root equivalent is 6.7% of the lowest studied dose. Against the extract trial it is 0.4%.

The math: 100 mg divided by 1,500 mg is 6.7%. Divided by 3,000 mg it is 3.3%. And 10 mg of extract divided by 2,400 mg is 0.4%.

Before you buy05

Are maca gummies safe and worth buying?

Maca is eaten as a food in Peru, but safety data for supplement doses is thin. Ask a clinician if you are unsure.

Memorial Sloan Kettering says maca may not be safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and advises people with hormone-sensitive cancers to talk to their provider (MSK, Maca). The HoneyBoost label also says not to use it if pregnant, lactating or on other medications.

Count the sugar: 3 g of added sugar per gummy, 90 g per bottle. See sugar and gummies.

Our post on maca root dosage covers the powder side. No source tests HoneyBoost, and a clinician is the right place to take erection or drive concerns.

FAQ06

HoneyBoost questions people ask

Do maca gummies contain real maca?

They contain whatever the label prints. HoneyBoost prints 10 mg of 10:1 maca root extract per gummy, equal to 100 mg of root. The label names no standardized active compound and no lab report is published.

How many maca gummies equal one scoop of maca powder?

No source gives a standard scoop, so we cannot say. By label math, one HoneyBoost gummy equals 100 mg of root. A 1,500 mg trial dose is 15 times that, and the gummy would add sugar with each.

Are maca gummies better than capsules?

No source compares them. A capsule can hold more material in one dose, while a gummy adds sugar. HoneyBoost has 3 g of added sugar per gummy. Choose by label amounts, not by form.

Does maca change testosterone?

Memorial Sloan Kettering says maca did not change testosterone, LH, FSH, prolactin or estradiol in men. One trial in healthy men saw no testosterone change either. Maca may also skew some testosterone lab tests.
