Tongkat Ali for Men: What 25 mg of 100:1 Extract Means

Quick answer

Tongkat ali is the common name of Eurycoma longifolia, a root from Southeast Asia sold for men's vitality. HoneyBoost prints 25 mg of 100:1 extract per gummy, its largest herbal line. A 6-month trial used 200 mg a day, so one gummy holds 12.5% of that. No study tested HoneyBoost.

The basics01

What is tongkat ali and what is Eurycoma longifolia extract?

Tongkat ali is a shrub-like tree of Malaysia and nearby countries, and its root is the part sold as a supplement. Its botanical name is Eurycoma longifolia, and the root is boiled or turned into an extract.

Supplement makers use it for stamina and testosterone. A systematic review of male-sexual-health herbs rates eurycoma "possibly effective" for late-onset hypogonadism and for healthy men (Morgado 2024, T-Booster Evidence Review (IJIR)). That is a cautious grade, not a promise.

HoneyBoost is a gummy supplement, not testosterone and not an ED medicine. No source tests it. The photo shows plant material, not the amount in a gummy.

What it isA root from Southeast Asia (Eurycoma longifolia), also called longjack
Printed amount per gummy25 mg of extract printed, which the label says equals 2,500 mg of root
Plant equivalent on the label2,500 mg (100:1 extract)
Amount used in research200 mg a day of Eurycoma extract for 6 months, with training, in 45 men with low testosterone; LiverTox gives traditional doses of 100 to 400 mg
Strength of evidenceSome small trials report testosterone and mood changes in older or stressed men; trials are small and short
Main cautionSourcing matters: some tongkat ali products have been found to contain heavy metals or hidden drugs, and a 100:1 ratio claim cannot be checked from the label. Ask about insulin or blood pressure medicine.

On the label02

How much tongkat ali 100:1 extract is in one HoneyBoost gummy?

One HoneyBoost gummy holds 25 mg of tongkat ali root extract, printed as "Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) Root Extract 100:1." The label equates that to 2,500 mg of root.

A 100:1 ratio means about 100 parts of root for each part of extract. So 25 mg of extract stands for 2,500 mg of root. The big root number looks impressive, but it measures the raw material, not the active part. Trials report extract amounts, and so do we.

It is the largest of the six herbal lines, and it makes up one third of their 75 mg total. See all seven on the supplement facts page.

The evidence03

Does tongkat ali raise testosterone?

Some trials say yes, in some groups. None tested HoneyBoost, and we do not claim the gummy does.

A meta-analysis of five randomized trials found higher total testosterone with eurycoma. The pooled effect was a standardized mean difference of 1.352, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.565 to 2.138. The authors said more research was required (Leisegang 2022, Eurycoma and Testosterone Meta-analysis).

A 6-month trial gave 200 mg of extract a day, along with training, to 45 men with androgen deficiency (Leitao 2021, Tongkat Ali RCT in Aging Males (Maturitas)). These were men with a diagnosed problem. The results do not show the same effect in men with normal levels.

Low testosterone is a lab diagnosis

Symptoms alone cannot confirm it. Two morning blood tests can (Cleveland Clinic, Low Testosterone). See low testosterone basics.

For why these words are in so many men's products, see testosterone boosters explained.

Printed vs studied04

How does 25 mg of tongkat ali compare with study doses?

One gummy holds 12.5% of the 200 mg daily extract dose used in the 6-month trial. Of all seven lines, tongkat ali is the closest to its studied amount.

LiverTox lists a traditional range of 100 to 400 mg a day (LiverTox, Tongkat Ali). Against that range, 25 mg is 25% of 100 mg and 6% of 400 mg.

Eight gummies would reach 200 mg by arithmetic. We do not suggest that: the label prints no directions, and eight gummies would add 24 g of sugar and every other line.

Safety05

Is tongkat ali safe for your liver?

LiverTox lists tongkat ali as a possible rare cause of liver injury, with a likelihood score of D. It also lists no drug interactions.

Reports of liver injury exist, so anyone with liver disease should ask a clinician first (LiverTox, Tongkat Ali). A missing interaction list is not proof of safety. It may only mean the herb has been studied little.

  • Liver disease or liver-related medicines: ask your doctor first.
  • Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or deep tiredness: stop and seek care now.
  • The label says not to use it with a medical condition or other medications.

Quality06

Can tongkat ali products contain mercury?

Some have. In a 2004 test of 100 tongkat ali products on the Malaysian market, mercury exceeded that country's limit in 36 (Ang 2004, Mercury in Tongkat Ali Products).

That test covered other products in another country long ago. It says nothing about HoneyBoost, and we do not claim it is affected. It does show why a named lab report matters for a root extract.

The HoneyBoost front says "Lab Tested, No Artificial Additives," yet the Other Ingredients list "artificial color." No lab is named and no result is published. We cannot reconcile the two, and the seller should explain. Ask the order desk for this lot's results. See testing and quality.

Your decision07

Is HoneyBoost worth it for the tongkat ali?

Tongkat ali is the line with the best-matched amount and the most trial support in the gummy. Even so, one gummy holds an eighth of the trial dose.

  • For: printed amount, trial interest, no blend.
  • Against: 12.5% of the dose, a liver note, no lab report and 3 g of added sugar.

FAQ09

Tongkat ali questions answered

What is tongkat ali good for?

Tongkat ali is sold for stamina and testosterone. A meta-analysis of five trials found higher total testosterone with eurycoma, and its authors called for more research. No source tests HoneyBoost.

Is tongkat ali the same as Eurycoma longifolia?

Yes. Eurycoma longifolia is the botanical name and tongkat ali is the common name. HoneyBoost prints it as a root extract at 100:1 and 25 mg per gummy.

What does tongkat ali 100:1 mean?

A 100:1 extract is made from about 100 parts of root for each part of extract. So 25 mg of extract equals 2,500 mg of root, but root weight is not an amount of active compound.

How much tongkat ali is in one HoneyBoost gummy?

Each gummy holds 25 mg of tongkat ali root extract. A 6-month trial used 200 mg a day, so one gummy is 12.5% of that dose. The traditional range runs 100 to 400 mg.

Can tongkat ali damage the liver?

Reports exist. LiverTox lists tongkat ali as a possible rare cause of liver injury, score D. Anyone with liver disease should ask a doctor or pharmacist before using it.

Does tongkat ali interact with medicines?

LiverTox lists no drug interactions for tongkat ali, but that may reflect little study. The HoneyBoost label says not to take it while on other medications. Ask your pharmacist.
