Are There Heavy Metals in Tongkat Ali Products?

Quick answer

Tongkat ali heavy metals are a documented concern, not a finding about every product. In a 2004 test of 100 Malaysian tongkat ali products, 36 had mercury above the national limit. HoneyBoost contains tongkat ali extract, prints no test result, and no source tests it, so the label cannot settle the question.

The study01

Do tongkat ali products contain heavy metals?

Some do. A 2004 study of 100 tongkat ali products sold in Malaysia found mercury in 36 of them, at 0.52 to 5.30 ppm, above the country's quality requirement (Ang 2004, Mercury in Tongkat Ali Products).

Five of those 36 were already registered products. The authors added that the 64 products that passed "cannot be assumed safe," because one batch can differ from the next.

Two limits matter. The study is 22 years old, and it covered the Malaysian market. It says nothing about U.S. products, and nothing about HoneyBoost.

The bottle02

What does the HoneyBoost label say about testing?

The label prints "Lab Tested, No Artificial Additives." It names no lab, no test and no result.

The same label lists "artificial color" under Other Ingredients. We cannot reconcile the two lines from the bottle, and the seller should explain them. We do not defend the phrase and we do not accuse anyone.

The lot references HB-26/GO-7080 and HB-7080-26-GO are seller references. They are not lab proof, and no lab report is published. The label says nothing about metals.

Registered-facility and GMP badges appear on the seller's images. Registration is not approval, and the FDA does not approve facilities. Read our testing and quality page for each badge.

The rules03

Who checks supplements for contaminants before sale?

The FDA does not approve dietary supplements before they are sold (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements). That puts weight on the seller to show what is in the bottle.

FDA's lists show that sexual-enhancement products are a risk category. Its notification list holds about 196 notices, and one confirmed an undeclared drug in a gummy (FDA, hidden-drug gummy notification). HoneyBoost is not on the list as we read it. That is a category warning, not a statement about this bottle.

Mercury is a different problem from hidden drugs. We found no HoneyBoost test for either.

Questions to ask04

What should you ask a seller about tongkat ali testing?

Ask for a batch-level certificate of analysis that names the lab, the lot and the metals tested. A claim on a label is not that.

  • Which lab tested this lot, and when?
  • Which metals, and what were the numbers against the limits?
  • Where was the tongkat ali grown and extracted?
  • Does the report match the lot printed on my bottle?

Email the order desk at [email protected] or call Order desk. Keep any answer. We list what the seller can and cannot show on the batch verify page.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist first

If you have kidney, liver or nerve problems, or take regular medicine, ask before any herbal product. Report problems to FDA MedWatch (FDA, MedWatch).

FAQ05

Tongkat ali heavy metals questions

What is the mercury limit for herbal products?

The 2004 study used Malaysia's quality requirement, and 36 of 100 products failed it. We found no U.S. figure in the sources we read. Do not apply that number to HoneyBoost or any U.S. product.

Does a GMP badge mean a supplement has no heavy metals?

No. A GMP badge is a seller image, and the label names no certifier. A good-practice program is not a result for one lot. Ask for a lot-level lab report that lists the metals tested.

Can you taste or see heavy metals in a gummy?

No. Metals in a supplement cannot be seen, smelled or tasted at the levels these studies describe. Only a lab test can find them, which is why a published report matters more than a promise.

Is HoneyBoost tested for heavy metals?

The label says "Lab Tested" but names no lab, test or result, and no report is published. We cannot say whether metals were tested. Ask the seller for a lot-level report.
