What Is the Added Sugar Limit for Men, and How Do You Count It?

Quick answer

The added sugar limit for men is 150 calories a day, about 9 teaspoons or roughly 36 g, according to the American Heart Association. You count it by adding the "Includes ... Added Sugars" line on every label you eat. One HoneyBoost gummy prints 3 g of added sugar, about 8% of that limit.

The number01

What is the daily added sugar limit for men?

The American Heart Association says most men should have no more than 150 calories of added sugar a day. That is about 9 teaspoons (AHA, Added Sugars).

The AHA page gives teaspoons and calories, not grams. At about 4 g a teaspoon, 9 teaspoons is roughly 36 g (our arithmetic).

The limit for most women is lower: 100 calories, about 6 teaspoons. It is a ceiling, not a target. Nobody needs to reach it.

Counting02

How do you count added sugar from a label?

Find the line that reads "Includes ... Added Sugars" under Total Sugars, and add up those grams across everything you eat and drink in a day.

"Includes" tells you the added sugar is already counted inside total sugars (FDA, Added Sugars on the Nutrition Facts Label). So do not add the two lines together. Use the added sugar number only.

  1. Read the serving

Grams are per serving. A HoneyBoost serving is 1 gummy (4.2 g).

  2. Take the added sugar line

Write down the grams after "Includes." Ignore total sugars for this count.

  3. Multiply by what you ate

Two servings means twice the grams. Sum every label across the day.

  4. Compare with the ceiling

Divide the total by 36 g for the share of the AHA limit used.

How much of the limit is one gummy with added sugar?

One HoneyBoost gummy prints 3 g of added sugar. That is about 8% of the 36 g working limit and 6% of the FDA Daily Value.

FDA calls 5% DV or less a low source of added sugars and 20% or more a high source (FDA, Added Sugars on the Nutrition Facts Label). At 6%, the gummy sits just above "low." It is not low sugar or sugar-free. The first two Other Ingredients are sugar and corn syrup.

A bottle holds 30 gummies, so 90 g of added sugar in all. The label prints no directions line, so ask the order desk before using more than one. More in HoneyBoost sugar and gummies.

Your situation04

Does the 36 g limit apply to everyone?

No. The AHA figure is general guidance for most men. It is not a plan for a man with diabetes, and it is not a reason to change any medicine.

If you have diabetes, prediabetes or heart disease, ask your doctor or pharmacist how added sugar fits your day. Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed. The HoneyBoost label also says not to take it if you are suffering from a medical condition or taking other medications, and to consult a physician first.

What no source tests

No study has tested HoneyBoost. The sugar math above comes from the label and the two sources named, not from any result in men who use it.

Use the number05

What is a simple way to stay under the limit?

Tally added sugar from labels for a few days, then see how much room is left. A small number like 3 g only matters next to the rest of your day.

Read the "Includes" line, count the serving you actually eat, and treat 36 g as a ceiling. Erection or energy problems also deserve a clinician visit, since they can signal other health conditions. See the supplement facts and the ingredient list before you decide.

FAQ06

HoneyBoost questions people ask

How many grams of added sugar can a man have a day?

The American Heart Association sets the limit for most men at 150 calories of added sugar a day, about 9 teaspoons. That works out to roughly 36 g by our arithmetic, since the AHA page gives teaspoons and calories rather than grams. Treat it as a ceiling.

How many grams is 9 teaspoons of sugar?

Nine teaspoons of sugar is roughly 36 g, counting about 4 g a teaspoon. The AHA page lists the teaspoons and the calories but no gram figure, so this conversion is our own arithmetic. Use it as a working number, not an exact one.

Where is added sugar on a supplement label?

Look under Total Carbohydrate on the Supplement Facts panel for the line that begins with "Includes" and ends with Added Sugars. That figure is already inside total sugars. On HoneyBoost it reads 3 g per gummy, 6% of the Daily Value.

Is the 36 g limit the same as the 50 g Daily Value?

No. The 36 g figure is the AHA's daily ceiling for most men. The 50 g Daily Value is FDA's reference number for the percent shown on labels, based on a 2,000-calorie diet. A product can be 6% DV and still count toward your 36 g.

Should men with diabetes use the same sugar limit?

The AHA figure is general guidance for most men, not advice for a person with diabetes. Ask your doctor or pharmacist what fits your plan, and keep taking prescribed medicine as directed. Do not change a medicine because of a supplement or a number.
