Why Is There Corn Syrup in Supplements, and Does It Count as Sugar?

Quick answer

Corn syrup in supplements is a sweetener used in the gummy base. On the HoneyBoost label it is the second Other Ingredient, right after sugar, and the panel prints 3 g of added sugar per gummy. The label does not say how much of that 3 g is corn syrup.

The ingredient01

Why is there corn syrup in a supplement?

In a gummy, corn syrup is part of the sweet, chewy base that holds the active ingredients. It is not an active ingredient.

The HoneyBoost Other Ingredients read: sugar, corn syrup, water, pectin, citric acid, natural flavor, guar gum, tapioca starch, sodium citrate and artificial color. Corn syrup is second.

The label gives no reason for any ingredient. A gummy base commonly pairs a sweetener with a gelling agent such as pectin, but that is general food knowledge, not a statement from the maker. It does say "corn syrup" and nothing more specific, so we do not name a type.

Not an active line

Corn syrup sits under Other Ingredients, not in the seven Supplement Facts lines. Those lines are zinc plus six others, about 78 mg in all by our arithmetic, against 3 g of sugar.

The count02

Does corn syrup count as added sugar?

On a label, sweeteners put in during making are counted on the Added Sugars line. HoneyBoost's panel puts all 3 g of its sugar there.

FDA explains that "Includes" before added sugars shows they are counted inside total sugars, and sets the Daily Value at 50 g (FDA, Added Sugars on the Nutrition Facts Label). HoneyBoost prints 3 g total, 3 g added, 6% DV.

The panel does not split the 3 g between sugar and corn syrup. Nor does it print the weight of either. That is a gap in what the label tells you, not a flaw we can measure.

Your day03

How does corn syrup fit the daily sugar limit?

It fits the same way any added sugar does: gram by gram, against the limit.

The American Heart Association says most men should stay under 150 calories of added sugar a day, about 9 teaspoons (AHA, Added Sugars). That is roughly 36 g by our arithmetic. One gummy is 3 g, about 8%. A bottle holds 90 g.

The AHA figure covers added sugars as a group. We found no source in this research that ranks corn syrup against sugar, so we do not claim one is better. Learn the counting steps in the added sugar limit for men.

Where do you find the sugar on the HoneyBoost panel?

It is under Total Carbohydrate: total sugars 3 g, then "Includes 3 g Added Sugars," 6% DV.

Before you decide05

Who should ask a clinician about gummy sugar?

Anyone with diabetes, prediabetes or heart disease should ask a doctor or pharmacist before adding a sugar-containing gummy.

The label says not to take HoneyBoost if you are suffering from a medical condition or taking other medications, and to consult a physician first. Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed. No source tests HoneyBoost. See the supplement facts, the ingredient review and gummy vitamins and sugar.

FAQ06

HoneyBoost questions people ask

Is corn syrup the same as high-fructose corn syrup?

The HoneyBoost label says "corn syrup" and does not name a type, so we do not claim it is high-fructose. We found no source in this research that settles the question for this product. The maker or the order desk can tell you what the syrup is.

How much corn syrup is in a HoneyBoost gummy?

The label does not say. It lists corn syrup second among Other Ingredients and prints 3 g of added sugars per gummy in all, with no split between sugar and syrup. Ask the order desk if the breakdown matters to you.

Is corn syrup worse than sugar in a supplement?

No source gathered here compares them for this purpose, so we make no ranking. Both count toward the added sugars total on the label and toward the American Heart Association's daily limit. Judge a gummy by its total added sugar grams.

Where is corn syrup listed on a supplement label?

Corn syrup appears in the Other Ingredients line under the Supplement Facts panel, not in the panel's main lines. Its sugar shows up in the Includes line for Added Sugars. On HoneyBoost, the panel prints 3 g added sugars per gummy.

Does corn syrup change the 6% Daily Value?

The 6% already includes everything the label counts as added sugars, whatever the source. FDA's Daily Value for added sugars is 50 g, and 3 g is 6% of it. Corn syrup is not counted separately on the HoneyBoost panel.
