Does Damiana Affect Libido? What the Evidence Shows
Damiana libido claims rest on traditional use and animal studies, not human trials. Memorial Sloan Kettering finds limited evidence and says there are no human data on its effect on sexual behavior. HoneyBoost prints 10 mg of a 5:1 damiana leaf extract per gummy, and no source tested that amount.

The evidence01
Is there evidence that damiana affects libido?
Not in people. MSK says animal studies show damiana can reduce anxiety and affect sexual behavior, but "there are no human data" (MSK, Damiana). It also calls the evidence of stimulant effects limited.
The reputation is old. Damiana has been used as a traditional aphrodisiac. Tradition tells us how people have used a plant. It does not tell us what the plant does.
The only human sexual-function work MSK mentions is small studies of multi-ingredient formulas in women. Several ingredients were in those formulas, so no result belongs to damiana alone. None involved men taking damiana.
A fair comparison02
What would a real desire study look like?
It would be a placebo-controlled trial in people, with a named dose and a self-rated desire score. Maca has one, and damiana does not.
In a 12-week trial, healthy men aged 21 to 56 took 1,500 mg or 3,000 mg of maca or placebo. Self-rated desire improved from week 8 on, and testosterone did not differ from placebo (Gonzales 2002, Maca and Sexual Desire).
That is the type of study damiana lacks. Even maca's result is for gram doses of another product, so it says nothing about HoneyBoost's 10 mg of extract.
| Item | Maca | Damiana |
|---|---|---|
| Human trial on desire | Yes, 12 weeks, healthy men | None found |
| Dose studied | 1,500 or 3,000 mg | No dose in our sources |
| HoneyBoost per gummy | 10 mg extract (100 mg root) | 10 mg extract (50 mg leaf) |

The label03
What does HoneyBoost print for damiana?
It prints "Damiana (Turnera diffusa) Leaf Extract 5:1, 10 mg (equivalent to 50 mg)." That is one of seven lines, and every line shows its amount.
Ten milligrams is under a quarter of one percent of the 4.2 g gummy. The Daily Value is not established, so the panel gives no percentage.
The label also quotes "Bigger Drive. Harder. Longer." Those are the label's words, not ours. We found no source that supports them for this product, and our label claims page answers each line.
Read how the full panel adds up on our Supplement Facts page. For the plant itself, see damiana tea vs extract.

What else can lower desire, and who should you ask?
Low desire has many causes, and a plant extract is rarely the answer. Stress, poor sleep, relationship strain, low mood, some medicines and medical problems all play a part.
A clinician can check the likely ones. They can review your medicines, since some lower desire, and order a blood test if low testosterone is a question. See our low testosterone basics and vitality habits pages.
Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your doctor or pharmacist about any supplement. MSK says damiana may affect blood sugar in animal studies, so people with diabetes should ask first.
"Do not take if pregnant, lactating, suffering from a medical condition or taking other medications. Consult a physician before using this product." No source tests HoneyBoost.
FAQ05
Damiana libido questions
Is damiana a natural aphrodisiac?
It has a traditional use as one. MSK says animal studies show effects on sexual behavior but there are no human data. Tradition is not proof, so we make no aphrodisiac claim for HoneyBoost.
How long does damiana take to affect libido?
We found no human study, so no timeline exists. The maca trial we cite saw changes in self-rated desire from week 8, but that is a different plant and dose. HoneyBoost has no study.
Can women use damiana for desire?
The small human studies MSK mentions involved multi-ingredient formulas in women, so damiana's own effect is unknown. HoneyBoost is a men's formula, and the label excludes pregnant or lactating women.
Does damiana lower or raise testosterone?
We found no human source on damiana and testosterone. MSK mentions mixed findings on estrogenic effects. Only a clinician's blood test shows your testosterone level.
