Damiana Tea or Damiana Extract: What Is the Difference?

Quick answer

Damiana tea is a drink steeped from the dried leaf of the damiana plant, used traditionally as an aphrodisiac. A HoneyBoost gummy has no tea. It prints 10 mg of a 5:1 leaf extract, equal to 50 mg of leaf. Memorial Sloan Kettering finds limited evidence for damiana and no human data for sexual behavior.

The plant01

What is damiana tea?

Damiana tea is a hot water infusion of dried Turnera diffusa leaf. People have long used the plant as a traditional aphrodisiac, which is the reason it shows up in men's products.

A tea is the whole leaf steeped in water. How much of the leaf's compounds reach the cup depends on the leaf, the steeping time and the water. Nothing is standardized.

An extract is different. A maker pulls compounds out of the leaf, concentrates them and weighs a set amount. HoneyBoost uses the second path, in gummy form.

Tea vs extract02

How is damiana tea different from the extract in HoneyBoost?

The tea is a loose leaf drink with an unknown amount per cup. The HoneyBoost gummy prints "Damiana (Turnera diffusa) Leaf Extract 5:1, 10 mg (equivalent to 50 mg)."

That 5:1 ratio means about 5 parts of leaf went into 1 part of extract. So the gummy holds 10 mg of extract made from about 50 mg of leaf. Fifty milligrams is a very small amount of leaf.

We found no source that gives a dose of damiana, for tea or extract. MSK's page lists none. So we cannot say how a cup of tea compares with a gummy.

What is known03

Does research support damiana tea?

Not for sexual function. MSK says there is limited evidence of damiana's stimulant effects, and that animal studies show it can affect sexual behavior but "there are no human data" (MSK, Damiana).

The only human sexual-function work on that page involved small studies of multi-ingredient formulas in women. Those results cannot be assigned to damiana alone.

MSK also says damiana may affect blood sugar based on animal studies. If you have diabetes or take blood sugar medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist before using damiana as tea or in a product.

We do not claim damiana helps desire. For more, read our damiana and libido post and the damiana ingredient page.

Choosing04

Should you drink damiana tea or take a gummy?

Neither choice is shown to work for desire or erections, so the useful question is what each carries. Tea carries no sugar but has an unknown amount. A gummy has a printed amount and 3 g of added sugar.

One gummy is 6% of the FDA Daily Value for added sugars (FDA, Added Sugars on the Nutrition Facts Label). A bottle holds 90 g. Plain unsweetened tea has none.

Whatever you choose, tell your clinician. Keep taking prescribed medicine. Erection problems or low drive deserve a visit, since they can reflect sleep, stress, medicine side effects or heart health. See our ED basics.

Ask before you add it

The label warns against use if pregnant or lactating, with a medical condition, or with other medications. Consult a physician. No source tests HoneyBoost, and the label prints no directions line.

FAQ05

Damiana tea questions

How much damiana is in a cup of tea?

It varies, and we found no source that sets an amount. A tea bag or loose leaf can hold very different weights. By comparison, a HoneyBoost gummy prints 10 mg of extract from about 50 mg of leaf.

Is damiana tea safe to drink every day?

We found no safety study of daily damiana tea. MSK notes it may affect blood sugar in animal studies. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have diabetes or take regular medicine.

Does damiana tea have caffeine?

We found no source in our review that states a caffeine content. MSK describes limited evidence of stimulant effects. Check the package of any tea you buy, and ask a pharmacist if caffeine matters for your health.

Is damiana the same as a prescription ED drug?

No. Damiana is a plant used traditionally. MSK says there are no human data on its sexual effects. Prescription ED drugs are tested medicines. Do not swap one for the other.
